NEWS RELEASE

Kerry Boyd Named 2020 Alaska Superintendent of the Year

Kerry Boyd Yukon-Koyukuk School District Superintendent & 2020 Alaska Superintendent of the Year

The Alaska Superintendents Association (ASA) is honored to announce Yukon-Koyukuk School District Superintendent, Kerry Boyd, as Alaska’s 2020 Superintendent of the Year. The Superintendent of the Year program, now in its 33rd year, pays tribute to a school system’s top leader who exemplifies leadership for learning, personal and organizational communication, professionalism, and community involvement.

Superintendent Boyd is starting her twelfth year as Superintendent of the Yukon-Koyukuk School District but has been a part of the district since 2005. Her district, which covers the area of Washington state, has 16 sites, and she personally visits each community several times throughout the year. She understands what is important to each and every site and knows the families. One principal remarked that he watched her greet 200 attendees at graduation, and she knew them and they knew her.

Her active leadership also reaches to the state level. Ms. Boyd has been an officer in the Alaska Superintendents Association for seven years, and serves on the Alaska Council of School Administrators (ACSA) board. She has been the Coalition for Education Equity president and has been a statewide leader in the implementation of ESSA as well as serving on several statewide policy committees. “Superintendent Boyd is a servant leader who models every day that relationships are key to being a successful education leader,” added Superintendent Patrick Mayer, ASA and ACSA President.

“Ms. Boyd is very approachable and sincerely considers all aspects of the challenges that face our teachers and students. She takes those extra steps to connect with all stakeholders in our district so she has an understanding of concerns…she regularly flies to our River schools and seems unhesitant to be involved with many activities, engaging with staff, students and community members,” Danae Davis, Raven Homeschool Advisory Teacher and MYEA President.

“She worked with her team to bring our district out of corrective action and continues to monitor the achievement, growth, and needs of students and staff in her charge.” Andrea Cottrell, Director of Distance Education. “Her support of the Native Language program offered to students K-12th grade demonstrates her respect and understanding of the communities our students come from and the need for students to embrace cultural identity along with learning Western ways to provide them choice as they determine their futures.”

Commissioner of Education and Early Development Dr. Michael Johnson added, “Congratulations to Kerry Boyd on receiving this worthy honor. Her leadership and commitment to rural Alaska is a shining star among the successes in Alaska’s schools. I look forward to Alaskans getting to know Kerry and the kind of leadership that makes a difference in the lives of our students.”

“In a nutshell, Ms. Boyd embraces everything that Alaska is. She is bold, and brave, and not afraid to set lofty goals.” Shaine Nixon, Principal in Yukon-Koyukuk School District. “She understands the history of education in Alaska and she works to create a bond between the cultural expectations and the state requirements which led to the creation of her Non-Negotiables: instructional walkthroughs, teacher mentoring, bell to bell instruction, high expectations, positive school climate, academic priority, established school goals, professional support, and quarterly gatherings. Ms. Boyd is the embodiment of an exceptional leader.”

ASA will advance Superintendent Boyd’s candidacy to the 2020 National Superintendent of the Year program knowing that she is highly respected by her colleagues, board members, staff, students and constituents throughout Alaska. All State Superintendents of the Year will be honored in February at the 2020 AASA National Conference on Education in San Diego, California.

Aspiring Superintendent Program

Over the past several years, the Alaska Superintendents Association has been working hard to support leadership development with all superintendents, especially new superintendents. Providing in-depth learning opportunities relevant to the Alaska’s superintendent experience is one way that ASA offers to empower Alaska’s education leaders with proven tools for success.

The Aspiring Superintendent Program is an introduction to the tools for success for any educational leader ready to learn more about next steps into the superintendent role. Developed with practical information and insight from experienced superintendents, the Aspiring Superintendent Program brings together a cohort of education leaders to empower them with effective leadership skills and connect them with seasoned superintendents who know the needs of Alaskan districts and what it takes to succeed.

The program consists of a series of webinars and personalized, virtual meetings and (when possible) face-to-face meetings focused on core skills required in today’s Alaskan school districts. Real problem-solving scenarios are explored in-depth, along with a deep analysis of common situations confronting leaders including board relations, ethics, communications, budgeting, advocacy, instruction, politics and an overall understanding of the role and expectations of the Alaskan superintendent.

The program kicks-off with an introductory online seminar in August of 2020 followed by scheduled collaborative meetings in conjunction with other ASA/ACSA sponsored events.

ACSA

The Alaska Council of School Administrators (ACSA) was created to serve as an umbrella for four of Alaska’s premier educational leadership organizations: the Alaska Superintendents Association (ASA), Alaska Association of Secondary School Principals (AASSP), Alaska Association of Elementary School Principals (AAESP), the Alaska Association of School Board Officials (ALASBO) and other district office administrators.

ACSA’s unifying purpose is to support educational leaders through professional forums, provide a voice that champions possibilities for all students and provide purposeful advocacy for public education. ACSA comprises professional educational leaders of Alaska’s schools and school systems. Members include superintendents and other central office administrators, university professors, elementary and secondary principals and school business officials. ACSA is also proud to administer the Alaska Staff Development Network, Alaska’s premier, long-standing and highly regarded staff development resource. As an umbrella organization, ACSA takes a lead role in supporting and advocating for public education while recognizing the value and uniqueness of each member organization.
